STANLEY SHELDON | ROCK DIARY

Jagger, Frampton, Tea & Me

After the huge success of Comes AlivePeter had suddenly been propelled into the upper echelon of the rock world.
For our follow-up album, ‘I’m in You,’ Mick Jagger and Stevie Wonder responded in the affirmative to a request by Pete, and they both magically appeared at Electric Lady Studios to help us make the record. Jagger sang on one track, Stevie played harmonica on another. Moreover, Ritchie Hayward (from Little Feat) played drums on a track, and Mike Finnegan came in and arranged vocal parts on our cover of Stevie’s hit, ‘Signed, Sealed, Delivered, (I’m Yours).’ We were hanging out and recording with some of the most respected names in the business, and some of them were boyhood idols of mine as a matter of fact. Not bad for a bunch of white boys…One night, I walked into the control room of Studio B at Electric Lady and saw Mick Jagger standing there, next to Peter!
They were discussing some vocal overdubs they were going to attempt. Standing right next to both of them were Peter’s mother and father, Peg and Owen. They were all drinking tea, and complimenting each other in the most civilized manner. I distinctly remember being struck by the diminutive stature of everyone around me. Now I am not that tall either, but in this group I was starting to feel a little taller. The Studio B control room at Electric Lady is a relatively small room, and the overall effect had left me feeling as if I had been magically transported to the “Shire,” having tea with Frodo, Bilbo, and Sam.
